Worst Run of My Life

Hi from DC!

I am double posting today because I just HAD to tell you guys about the worst run of my life.

There is a gym in my hotel. With nice treadmills with TVs on them. A water cooler in the corner. Fresh towels. Pretty much the makings of an excellent hotel gym.

But wait. There is no AC.

And everything is PACKED in there.

I had ran on the treadmill down there the last time I was in DC, but it was only a couple of miles and I was alone.

Tonight, I was not alone. There was three other people in the gym with me.

I started out feeling great, I had 6 miles to go and was not super jazzed about having to do it on a treadmill, but I can adapt.

Typically, I start to sweat around the mile marker, just a light misting we'll call it. Well, tonight, I was DRIPPING by 0.5 miles. By 1 mile I felt like I was going to pass out. At 1.25 miles, I stopped for some water and ended up swilling all 16 ounces of my water. I got back on and ran another 0.35 miles and stopped to walk.

The rest my friends, was alternating between running, feeling on the verge of death, and walking, feeling like a total failure.

I got 4.5 miles in 60 minutes. Yes, that's 13 something a mile. I haven't run that slow since I was a newbie. Granted, when I was running, I was running 10:30 minute miles, but there was a LOT of walking.

I completely soaked through my shirt and ended up consuming 32 ounces of water. For 4.5 miles. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that it had to be about 80ish degrees in the gym between the body heat of the three of us and no ventilation whatsoever.

Tomorrow I am going to squeeze out 6 miles running outside, up and down the little strip that my hotel is on. I may have to go back and forth 20 times, but I will not attempt running more than 2 miles in the hotel gym again.

Talk about a self esteem killer.

  1. No a/c had to be killer! Sometimes runs just go bad, you're not a failure!

  2. Where abouts are you staying? There might be trails or a nicer gym nearby (DM me on twitter if you don't want to tell the world).

  3. Ugh that sucks! I have been there, I used to run on the treadmill in my garage in the hot and humid summer weather; not a smart idea! Good luck on your make-up run tomorrow, go get 'em girl!!

  4. The gym in my apartment complex has the same problem. We have windows that might allow for a nice cross breeze - but they are all locked. It gets muggy and awful in there after you run for about 5 minutes.

I hope you enjoy DC while you're here! How long are you in town?

  5. Oh god! I'm so sorry. It sounds miserable. Don't get down about it. Some runs are just like that. Good luck today!

  6. Ugh, that sounds brutal. I'm super sensitive to the heat also and you definitely shouldn't let it get to you! Hope you have a good run today!
